More troops die of suicide than in combat

Very sad and very troubling:

"For the second year in a row, the U.S. military has lost more troops to suicide than it has to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The reasons are complicated and the accounting uncertain — for instance, should returning soldiers who take their own lives after being mustered out be included?

But the suicide rate is a further indication of the stress that military personnel live under after nearly a decade of war.

Figures released by the armed services last week showed an alarming increase in suicides in 2010, but those figures leave out some categories."

America, you can be a clueless idiot and be a congressperson too!

From The Raw Story:

"But we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States," Bachmann added, claiming "men like John Quincy Adams... would not rest until slavery was extinguished in the country." -Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN)

You know, I'd say that Kentucky is better but we put Jim Bunning into the congress and senate several times.

You don't say? Fox News guilty of hypocrisy?

Industries fight against softdrink taxes.

With record rates of diabetes they can deal with it. The corn lobby is going to be fighting hard against this as well and they're listed on the 'about us' portion of their website:

Corn Refiners Association

I say tax them and require they use real sugar, they're a burden on our healthcare system.

Paul'bots' never cease making me laugh

via Barefoot:

It's the end of the world as we know it, and I don't feel fine.

As Eric Cantor squirms on Meet the Press over the legitimacy of Obama's citizenship I read this:

"Republicans’ 2010 election triumph will fuel civilization’s demise, Chomsky says"

“You could almost interpret [the election] as a kind of a death knell for the species," Noam Chomsky, professor emeritus of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in a recent interview.

But he's not the only one worried; the US business press is, too.

Chomsky continued, "There was an article in Bloomberg BusinessWeek, you know – not a radical rag exactly. They’re running through the new Republicans coming to Congress, and they’re worried about them.”

The cause for concern is that these newly-elected conservative members that now comprise the majority in Congress believe that global climate change is not the result of human industrial activities.

“One of the reasons is because they’re global warming deniers,” he told the Nation magazine. “Almost all – that means the powerful House committees, like science and technology and so on, are in hands of people who think there’s nothing to it – or at least claim that they think that, but what they actually think is another story.”

Great Sarah Palin video...

What does a volcanic eruption in Europe, snow storms in Europe, and snow storms in the United States all have in common?

They are natural events that ground airplanes and paralyze transportation.

What does every Western nation have besides the United States that allows them to get around this?

Highspeed Rail.

Good thing Obama and the Democratic congress has an big expansion of highspeed rail. Volcanoes can erupt, snow can fall but the trains still move.

With the shrinking supply of oil The United States has no choice but to look into alternatives in energy and transportation. And while I love an airplane flight we'd better not put all of our eggs into one basket.

It's a true shame that Lexington isn't on this grid... yet.

No kidding? You're telling me The Supreme Court had a partisan angle on the Citizens United Case?

From CNN:

"Media reports in the past have mentioned Scalia's and Thomas's ties to the Kochs.

"We believe it is inappropriate for a Supreme Court judge to be 'featured' at or attend closed-door strategy meetings with political donors, corporate CEOs, candidates and political officials, and thereby lend the prestige of their position to the political goals of that event," Common Cause argues in its petition. "A reasonable person would question the impartiality of Justices Thomas and Scalia in the Citizens United case based on their attendance at political strategy meetings sponsored by a corporation that raises and spends millions to defeat Democrats and elect Republicans."

There was no immediate reaction from the high court or the Justice Department about the request for a government probe."

Another awesome, baseless email chain letter bashing The President and First Lady.

God if these weren't so common and if so many people didn't take them at face value they would inherently be laugh riots. However people (usually older, less educated people) do believe this sort of nonsense, so here we go:

From Dea Riley in jest, and disgusted that she got such garbage:

> >
> > William will be a good king, he’s a very smart young man…..

> > Royal snub for the Obama’s:
> >
> >
> >
> > Prince William and Kate Middleton wedding: President Barack Obama and Michelle are not invited!
> >
> > Michelle is livid over the snub and Obama can’t believe it…
> >
> > What is happening and what can I do about it seems to be the thoughts in Obama’s head.
> >
> > Meanwhile, William and Kate have it together.
> >
> > Prince William and Kate Middleton are planning a royal wedding April 2011. Prince William personally told the wedding planners to strike the Obama’s from the guest list. He stated, “He did not want Michelle Obama trying to pull her center of attention ploy trying to upstage Kate on Kate’s wedding day”. Sources reveal that William states, “She may run Obama, but she doesn’t run him or England ”. The Democrats and Obama would like to play the race card as they have done so many times in America , but it is difficult when other black heads of states are invited to the wedding and will be warmly received.
> >
> > Now, what is the future King of England ’s reasons for snubbing the Obama’s to the world and making them a laughing stock? It has nothing to do with America beyond being so stupid as to elect such low class imperfection to the office of President and First Lady. The decisions that they make can and will affect the world.
> >
> > Secondly, Michelle called his mother, Diana, an over-sexed clothes horse and further stated that she, Michelle, was more popular than Diana ever was.
> >
> > Thirdly, Michelle Obama showed her butt at every major social function endeavoring to be the Queen in the lime light. In other words, just a lack of class.
> >
> > Fourthly, the Queen Mother, William’s grand mother, also has her reasons. Obama refused to bow to her but a few days later bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia and Michelle manhandled her by becoming too familiar by putting her arm around her. The Queen only shakes hands with gloves on… That is the tradition and it is still honored by the Royals. The Queen said to her staff, “Never allow that woman to be in the same room with me again” and she meant every word of it. The gifts from Obama and Michelle were both tacky and in poor taste… It is all a matter of class. In addition, the Queen Mother supported Prince William in his decision due to the fact that the word is out about the lavish booze parties at the White House, the expensive vacations and state visits that cost the American tax payers millions of dollars un-necessarily when the American people need the resources… We here at True American can’t decide if it is just low class, no class, or all that has just been mentioned.
> >
> >
> >
> >
> > The Obama’s are desperately trying to make it a slight against America . Every past Head of State has always been invited… This is not a state function and William is not yet a Sovereign. It is just a multi-million dollar private wedding and the Obama’s have been royally snubbed by the British Royals; not America , just the present classless leaders…

First of all, who sends, receives and or writes chain letters anymore? Here's another favorite:

Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from a historic event — may I even say a "weather event" of "Biblical Proportions" — with a historic blizzard of up to 44 inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to tens of thousands.

George Bush did not come.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV.

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else.

Our governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either.

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category five snowstorm. Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA trailer house.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean nobody demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything, either.

No Larry King, no Bill O'Rielly, no Oprah, no Chris Mathews, and no Geraldo Rivera.

No Shaun Penn, no Barbara Striesand, no Hollywood types to be found.

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.

Sent out caravans of SUVs to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families.

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.

We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "work or die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for "sittin at home" checks.

Even though a category five blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees north latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate.

It does seem that way, at least to me.

I hope this gets passed on.

Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does not owe you a living.

And this one got picked up in a British news article!!

It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing.

Dolphins have been trained in attack-and-kill missions since the Cold War. The US Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have apparently been taught to shoot terrorists attacking military vessels. Their coastal compound was breached during the storm, sweeping them out to sea. But those who have studied the controversial use of dolphins in the US defence programme claim it is vital they are caught quickly.

Leo Sheridan, 72, a respected accident investigator who has worked for government and industry, said he had received intelligence from sources close to the US government's marine fisheries service confirming dolphins had escaped.

'My concern is that they have learnt to shoot at divers in wetsuits who have simulated terrorists in exercises. If divers or windsurfers are mistaken for a spy or suicide bomber and if equipped with special harnesses carrying toxic darts, they could fire,' he said. 'The darts are designed to put the target to sleep so they can be interrogated later, but what happens if the victim is not found for hours?'

Usually dolphins were controlled via signals transmitted through a neck harness. 'The question is, were these dolphins made secure before Katrina struck?' said Sheridan.

The mystery surfaced when a separate group of dolphins was washed from a commercial oceanarium on the Mississippi coast during Katrina. Eight were found with the navy's help, but the dolphins were not returned until US navy scientists had examined them.

Sheridan is convinced the scientists were keen to ensure the dolphins were not the navy's, understood to be kept in training ponds in a sound in Louisiana, close to Lake Pontchartrain, whose waters devastated New Orleans.

The navy launched the classified Cetacean Intelligence Mission in San Diego in 1989, where dolphins, fitted with harnesses and small electrodes planted under their skin, were taught to patrol and protect Trident submarines in harbour and stationary warships at sea.

Criticism from animal rights groups ensured the use of dolphins became more secretive. But the project gained impetus after the Yemen terror attack on the USS Cole in 2000. Dolphins have also been used to detect mines near an Iraqi port.

Another win for centralized corporate information control, Comcast merges with NBC

Well, as if we needed more centralized corporate power.

via Washington Post: FCC approves Comcast and NBC joint venture.

"The Federal Communications Commission has approved Comcast's acquisition of NBC Universal, allowing for a joint venture that puts a vast library of television shows and movies under the control of the nation's biggest cable and broadband Internet service provider.

Together, the companies have 16.7 million broadband subscribers, about 23 million cable customer and dozens of lucrative channels such as USA, Bravo, MSNBC and CNBC.

In a 4-to-1 vote, the FCC determined the deal was in the nation's public interest and assigned a number of conditions to the venture to ensure that Comcast shares content with cable competitors and gives other networks fair access to its customers.

The Justice Department, which had signed off on the deal in an antitrust review, is expected to announce its own approval with conditions aimed at keeping Comcast-NBCU from quashing competition from other networks and Internet providers.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski approved of the joint venture late December, saying that ultimately the union would benefit consumers as Comcast promised to add 1,000 hours of news and informational programming to some channels, contribute $20 million in venture funds for minority programs, and $9.95 broadband Internet service for low-income households.

But Democratic Commissioner Michael J. Copps, the sole dissenting vote, said the concentration of media under Comcast's control would put too much power into one company that controls the access consumers have to entertainment and news. He said in the end that the venture would have too many potential conflicts.

The deal "reaches into virtually every corner of our media and digital landscapes and will affect every citizen in the land," Copps said in a statement. "All the majority’s efforts—diligent though they were—to ameliorate these harms cannot mask the truth that this Comcast-NBCU joint venture grievously fails the public interest."

Public interest groups immediately decried FCC's action, saying the deal could lead to more media consolidation. And even with conditions that prevent Comcast from withholding channels from cable competitors or charging them more, the cable giant will have too much control over the burgeoning online video market."

A truely American quote to be remembered:

via Bill Adkins, Grant County KY Democratic Chairman:

"This week we saw a white, Catholic, Republican judge murdered on his way to greet a Jewish, Democratic congresswoman, who was his friend. Her life was saved initially by a Mexican-American gay college student, and eventually by a Korean-American combat surgeon. Then it was all eulogized by our African-American president. In a tragic event, that's a remarkable statement about the country." ~Allen Ginsberg "unknown"

Hippie headstompin' Tim Profitt has... Er, will have his day in court Feb. 22

Another delay but boy I wonder what the mood of that jury is going to be after the Arizona shooting...

I couldn't make this court date, from the HL:

"A pretrial conference for an ex-Rand Paul volunteer accused of stomping on a liberal activist has been rescheduled for a second time.

The Tuesday hearing for Tim Profitt was continued until Feb. 22 so The Fayette County Attorney's office could have more time to submit evidence to Profitt's defense attorney, First Assistant County Attorney Brian Mattone said.

Assistant Fayette County Attorney Liz Bancroft told the Associated Press that the hearing was rescheduled to allow time for the alleged victim to provide video of the incident, which was videotaped by a television station and broadcast across the Internet after it occurred Oct. 25 in Lexington.

Profitt has pleaded not guilty to one count of fourth-degree assault in the scuffle, during which Lauren Valle, 23, an activist with, allegedly was stepped on by Profitt after being pinned to the ground by another man.

The incident occurred outside the site of the final debate between Paul and Democratic opponent Jack Conway.

Mattone said all evidence should be received and submitted before the hearing on Feb. 22.

"We anticipate that there will be either a guilty plea or they will be ready to set for trial," he said."

This is really absurd. How Profitt thinks with all of the video evidence that he could possible be exonerated of this charge is beyond Tea Party lunacy.

I'm going to try my best to be in court on the 22nd. I can't imagine Profitt wants to drag this through an trial, but these people are operating on a level that defies logic to begin with.

For those of you who don't know, the Tea Party in Central Kentucky has actually set up a legal defense fund for this brown shirt:

Add injury to insult they're trying to pressure the Fayette County Attorney's office to prosecute of all people, Lauren Valle.

Let's review the evidence again:

Bluegrass find's cause of dead birds, repeal of DADT of course!

Well whod a thunk it? We should have known all along. Just like 9/11 was caused from abortion not hawkish American foreign policy and Hurricane Katrina was caused by the geys:

From Blue Bluegrass:

"Over the weekend, Cindy Jacobs of Generals International posted a new video prompted by the fact that, as a prophet, people have been asking her about the meaning behind the recent rash of bird deaths … to which she replied that it might be due to the fact that America is violating God’s prohibition on homosexuality with support for gay marriage and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell:"

Follow the link to the video.

Sarah Palin is comin' south you liberal scum! Run and hide!

Wish this included lyrics... This is a super rad complicated song yo. I don't know if I can remember all of the lyrics to it.

I'll see if Barefoot can't convince DJ Sanity to put a couple of cleansing tracks down over this monster melody!

"Wash yo ass!"
"and cleanse yo mind!"

So after 4 productive years John Boehner takes the helm

Don't worry too much about it. Matt Taibbi strikes again illustrating how The Tea Party wants more than pomp and presentation which is the only thing John Boehner has to offer:

"Medicare Part D, No Child Left Behind, the Patriot Act — practically any significant piece of legislation that came out of the Bush presidency, it was a joke," says Chris Littleton, who heads a coalition of 58 Tea Party groups in Boehner's home state of Ohio.

The anger of Tea Partiers like Littleton erupted when they suddenly realized that their elected leaders in Congress had developed a primary allegiance not to constituents back home or even to ideology, but to themselves and their own dissolute, pay-for-play, you-scratch-mine, I'll-scratch-yours intramural bureaucratic calculus. Voters got mad when leaders covered up sex scandals, partied on corporate junkets when they should have been working on the public dime, wasted mountains of taxpayer money on political witch hunts instead of working to stave off another financial crisis or terrorist attack — and they got mad, especially, when congressional leaders stopped having the common decency to hide the lavish gifts funneled to them by their lobbyist pals in exchange for political favors, parading around in public with their goodies in hand without even caring how it looked.

"The irony is, no one — no one — represents all of these bile-inspiring qualities better than John Boehner. His most striking achievement is that there's a check mark next to his name on virtually every entry on the list of common public complaints about Congress. And yet, when the Republicans rolled back into the control of the House this past November on the strength of a nationwide Throw-the-Bums-Out movement, it was Boehner, the prototypical bum, who somehow clambered onto the congressional throne. It's hard to imagine that in all of American political history there has been a more unlikely marriage than John Boehner and the pitchfork-wielding, incumbent-eating Tea Party, whose blood ostensibly boils at the thought of business as usual. Because John Boehner is business as usual, a man devoted almost exclusively to ensuring his own political survival by tending faithfully to the corrupt and clanking Beltway machinery. How? Let us count the ways."

"This is where Boehner comes in: He represents the last stand of the Bush Republicans against this rising tide of public anger. The GOP establishment want the energy of the Tea Party, but they don't want to have to work for it. They're hoping — and they have plenty of reasons to have this hope — that the vast majority of Tea Partiers will be dazzled by their new status in Congress, or be willing to be bought off with corporate money, or be just plain dumb enough to fall for whatever pulled-out-of-the-ass phony reform rhetoric that guys like Boehner come up with, instead of making real changes to the way Congress does business. In a hilarious example of the former, Boehner with a straight face recently announced that he would push to cut committee budgets and member allowances by five percent, for an anticipated savings of — cue the clueless Dr. Evil laugh — $30 million. "It likely would be one of the first votes we cast," Boehner declared proudly, failing to recognize that paying for trillion-dollar bailouts and $900 billion tax breaks by cutting $30 million at a time is a little like planning a hostile takeover of IBM with a stack of Rite Aid coupons. That's not government; it's stand-up comedy. As for the sweeping changes that the Tea Party is looking for — Littleton's personal litmus test is deep cuts in both defense spending and Social Security — it's virtually unimaginable that Boehner will push for such a radical agenda. When Littleton met with party leaders after the election and asked what programs they are willing to cut, he was brushed aside. "We're going to be discussing that in April," he was told."

Rand will vote to raise debt ceiling:

"Oh I used to be disgusted and now I try to be amused"

Good catch Barefoot:

I've attempted to bury my head under a rock after this last election but I usually don't succeed.

Let me taste your tears Tea Baggers. You've been had, you bought it hook line and sinker:

Rand Paul saying no more debt before the election:

Rand Paul saying "we can have more debt, because I'm going to single handed cut the entire federal deficit in 1 year":

So... Tim Profitt, was this the liberty you could believe in? Was it worth stomping Lauren Valle's small little head over and being charged with a criminal offense?

We saw the cracks in the lining even before the election:

Congratulations Republican Party (Rand Paul) servants of the oligarchical commercial/corporate masters. You've managed once again to whip a bunch of paranoid 9/11 truther, birther, white nutjobs into an absolute frenzy with ideas like death camps, government taking over 20% of the economy and death panels. To the hills people! The sky is falling!

I leave you with this Southpark about 9/11 truthers.

Just as controversy begins to settle over shooting, along comes Rand Paul

From The Hill:

"Well, these are the kind of things that I think some on the left decided to manufacture even before the events occur. I mean, this is part of the playbook of Rahm Emanuel where they say any crisis should be used to their advantage to further their agenda," Paul said Wednesday evening on the Fox Business Network, referencing the former White House chief of staff.

Sarah Palin email hacker serves time in Kentucky prison

From the HL:

"CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A former Tennessee college student convicted of hacking Sarah Palin's e-mail account reported to an unfenced federal prison camp in Kentucky to begin a yearlong sentence that could end sooner if he behaves.

A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman said Thursday that 23-year-old David Kernell reported to the minimum security camp at Ashland, Ky., on Monday to begin a sentence that could end Nov. 23 with "good conduct time."

A Knoxville jury in late April convicted Kernell of unauthorized access to a protected computer and destroying records to impede a federal investigation. The jury acquitted him of wire fraud and deadlocked on an identity theft charge.

Kernell was a University of Tennessee economics major when he deduced the answers to security questions and gained access to Palin's private e-mail account just weeks before the 2008 election.

Kernell's attorney, Wade Davies of Knoxville, did not return a telephone message seeking comment Thursday.

The former Alaska governor and her daughter Bristol testified that the hacking, followed by Kernell's bragging online, while providing a password and Palin family telephone numbers to others, caused them emotional hardship.

Davis conceded at the trial that Kernell, the son of a Democratic lawmaker in Tennessee, made "some stupid decisions" in a prank but did not intend to harm anyone.

The sentence announced in November by U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Phillips fell short of the 18 month prison term sought by federal prosecutors, who contended that Kernell wanted to "derail" Palin's campaign as John McCain's running mate. Prosecutors said there should be punishment to deter other would-be hackers during election races.

Bureau of Prisons spokesman Edmond Ross said Kernell at the camp would have work assignments, possibly landscaping, food services or maintenance, that range in pay from 12 cents to 40 cents an hour.

"All federal inmates are expected to work," Ross said in a telephone interview.

Ross said the unfenced satellite camp at Ashland, in northeastern Kentucky, has 315 inmates who live in a dormitory-style setting.

Ross said that while federal prison camps have the "least amount of security," inmates know they are confined to the grounds. He said inmates generally have access to education and recreation programs and religious services and are allowed visitors.

Ross said Kernell near the end of his sentence would likely be transferred to a residential re-entry center, possibly at Knoxville."

The numbers are in, Obamacare is succeding

From Forbes via the Los Angeles Times:

"How significant is the impact? While we won’t have full national numbers until small businesses file their 2010 tax returns this April, the anecdotal evidence is as meaningful as it is unexpected.

United Health Group, Inc., the nation’s largest health insurer, added 75,000 new customers working in businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

Coventry Health Care, Inc., a large provider of health insurance to small businesses, added 115,000 new workers in 2010 representing an 8% jump."

Sarah Palin doubles down, and "reloads"

Now that's a maverick!

Sarah Palin: "America's Enduring Strength" from Sarah Palin on Vimeo.

Oh Sarah, words have no consequence anyhow. Just go ahead and openly call for the assasination of people you disagree with, keep "reloading" Sarah.

"This past summer, as the SF Chronicle reported at the time, a convicted felon named Byron Williams "loaded up his mother's Toyota Tundra with guns, strapped on his body armor and headed to San Francisco...with one thing in mind: to kill workers" at the ACLU and the Tides Foundation, hoping to "start a revolution."

On Monday, the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America will release an interview it conducted with Williams in which he explains that Glenn Beck's Fox News show "blew his mind." From the interview:

MEDIA MATTERS: When you talk about how conservative values have been lost in this country you were talking before about the liberal media. You were saying maybe Fox was the exception. You think Fox is worthwhile?

BYRON WILLIAMS: Well, I'm not gonna say anyone is worthwhile. But [unintelligible] I would've never started watching Fox if it wasn't for the fact that Beck was on there. And it was the things that he did, it was the things he exposed that blew my mind. I said, well, nobody does this.

UPDATE: via Mother Jones:

"But at least one House Republican stepped forward to warn the media against using Palin's latest "blood libel" comment to unfairly malign her. "I didn't hear what she said exactly, but I just want to make sure that people on both sides of the media don’t take this and try to turn it into something that I’m not sure that it is," said Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), leaing the House GOP's caucus meeting on Tuesday, adding that Palin has been unjustly attacked in the past. The Pennsylvania Republican, however, declined to comment on her specific remarks. "I honestly couldn't you exactly what she said, so I couldn’t put a comment out there that would be intelligent."

Shuster, however, did offer up his own reinterpretation of Jewish history in response to another question. When asked about accused assailant Jared Lee Loughner's political leanings, Shuster said: "I don't know. We'll uncover that as we go forward...But from what I heard, his two favorite books were Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto—that tells me the guy is on the left. People like to associate Hitler with the right, but in fact he was a socialist himself."

A Moment of Silence Monday for Congresswoman Giffords

From the Fayette County Democratic Party:

Dear Friends,

In the aftermath of the awful events in Tuscon yesterday, President Obama has called for a moment of silence on Monday, January 10, at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.

In the statement issued by the White House, the president said the moment of silence is to "honor the innocent victims of the senseless tragedy in Tucson, Ariz., including those still fighting for their lives," and "It will be a time for us to come together as a nation in prayer or reflection, keeping the victims and their families closely at heart."

Please keep Congresswoman Giffords (who is in critical condition), her family and staff, the other victims who were injured and their families, and the families of the deceased in your thoughts and prayers.

Brenda McClanahan,

FCDP Chair

Sarah used surveyor symbols, not crosshairs of course!

Oh!!! I get it!

From the Washington Monthly:

A 'SURVEYOR'S SYMBOL'?.... On March 22, the day before the Affordable Care Act became law, former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin (R) published a list of House Democrats with crosshairs, like that of a rifle scope, over their districts. A day later, she sent a message to "commonsense conservatives" and "lovers of America" -- it read, "Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!"

One of those crosshairs was directed to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) who was, of course, shot yesterday, which renewed questions about Palin's political excesses. A Palin aide yesterday rejected any connection, and said the crosshairs image was unrelated to firearms.

"We never ever, ever intended it to be gun sights," [Palin staffer Rebecca Mansour] said.

"It's surveyor's symbols," the interviewer Tammy Bruce suggested. [...]

Mansour agreed. She said that the graphic was contracted out to a professional. They approved it quickly without thinking about it. "We never imagined, it never occurred to us that anybody would consider it violent," she said. Rather, she said, that it was simply "crosshairs that you would see on a map."

There is "nothing irresponsible about our graphic," she said.

The two did not discuss the fact that the image was immediately followed by Palin urging like-minded folks to "reload." Of course, everyone knows surveyors' equipment needs to be reloaded, too, right? Oh wait....

It's worth emphasizing that the website for Palin's political action committee was scrubbed yesterday, and offending materials related to Giffords and crosshairs were removed.

So, I have three related questions. The first is, if Palin's materials were entirely defensible, why scrub the website? Isn't this an implicit acknowledgement of an offense?

The second is, if the crosshairs were unrelated to guns -- "Surveyor's symbols"? Seriously? -- why did Palin's team wait to come up with this alternative interpretation until yesterday?

And the third question is, I wonder just how difficult it would be for Palin to simply acknowledge, "In retrospect, those crosshairs were inappropriate. I regret it."

UPDATE: Remembered seeing this video a while back:

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Get that America? Who is inciting violence here?

Mean while, on the right side of the aisle...

Gee what are people on the right talking about?

Yep, watch them close ranks. Want to meet a special kind of nuts?

Check out Larry Klayman:

STOP using gun references/crosshairs in our political disussion!

While those on the right will act as if they think there was nothing wrong with putting crosshairs over congressional districts Sarah Palin's PAC was sure quick to pull the images down once a congresswoman was shot.

We know that words have power. Here's Keith Olbermann's special comment.

Thanks Sarah Palin!!

After a year of talk about death panels, birthers and conspiracy nuts someone shoots a congresswoman.

If you think this woman is a good person, much less than a good candidate for President of The United States you are a brainless moron.

Pray for Gabrielle Giffords

Here's the nutjob's youtube channel.

UPDATE: Good research on barefoot's part.

Giffords: "“Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they’ve gotta realize there are consequences to that action.”

UPDATE: Poking around looking for Palin's response, her Twitter account pointed towards a Facebook note:

"My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona.

On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

- Sarah Palin"

Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson resigns

Very surprising to say the least, wonder who Beshear will tap to fill his position?

Maybe Grayson wasn't feeling the love from the radical wing of the Kentucky Republican Party?

For those who don't know, Duncan Paul is Rand Paul's son.

UPDATE: Beshear names Bowling Green Mayor to fill position:

PBS special: Behind Taliban Lines

Simply terrifying, get us the hell out of Afghanistan, we've already been there for 10 years and there is no indication that we've done anything there to accomplish our goa... Wait, what are our goals there again?

Type into google: "why is the united states" and you'll see that "in afghanistan" is the second most sought answer.
